What happens when you outgrow your fishbowl? What happens when the people who you want support from the most aren’t ready to help you succeed? In this episode, Elizabeth and her business coach Danny J chat about how to navigate this touchy, and often difficult, phenomenon that happens especially for female business owners.

Especially for entrepreneurs, it’s easy to feel like you’re living on an isolated island. Sometimes people in our lives don’t quite understand the hustle, and this can make us boss babes question if we are reaching too high or asking for too much.

It’s interesting to see that as we start reaching for our dreams, how that presents itself in your relationships with people who aren’t on the same growth path as you are. As sad as it can be, sometimes this means living the fish in your current fishbowl behind.

This can be hard, because as we’re working hard to grow our business and as people, we expect that all of our loved ones are going to support us.

These people often come with good intentions - they just don’t want to see you get hurt or struggle. What they don’t realize, though, is that acting that way is actually keeping you from becoming your best self and reaching your goals.

As you start to outgrow your fishbowl, you need to create new connections. We may have friends that were there from the very beginning, but aren’t going to be able to help you reach the next level. Danny recounts a saying that an old work associate told her about this:

“The team that got you here is not going to get you there.”

Guard your mind

If there are people in your life who have a tendency to sabotage your success mindset, just remember that you are the one in control! You get to choose how much time you spend with those people, and you also get to choose how much significance you place on their opinions about your business or growth.

Give yourself permission to cut ties if you need to

If it’s painfully clear that you’ve outgrown someone, that’s OK. Ending a friendship or relationship can be so hard and painful, but it means you are making more room in your life for a supportive network. You can still love and care for those people. Your vision is just different than their vision, and if they just can’t be there for you, that’s okay.

Maintain an abundance mindset

You have to be willing to give up the good to go for the great. So many people settle with the “good” things, fully knowing that they aren’t going to reach their full potential with the things and people they are scared to lose. When we hang on to things or relationships that aren’t helping us grow or even pulling us backwards, we aren’t operating in a mindset of abundance.

Being a business owner or entrepreneur is a crazy ride. Surround yourself with people who make the ride enjoyable, exciting and easier.
